FEZA GÜRSEY MEMORIAL LECTURES

by Prof. Dr. K.L. Chang
National Taiwan University, Taipei, Taiwan.

May 2 - 9, 2011

TÜBİTAK - FEZA GÜRSEY INSTITUTE

Programme:

  • 1st Lecture 02.05.2011 Monday 14.30
Magnetic Monopole, Topological Soliton, Weak Mixing Angle and All That

Maxwell theory with and without magnetic charge is surveyed. The Yang-Mills non-Abelian gauge fields coupled to Higg’s fields are taken as an ansatz to the quantization of the magnetic monopole which exhibits the nature of topological charge. An extension to model of SU(2)XU(1) leads to the result that sin²θ= 1/4 .

  • 2nd lecture 03.05.2011 Tuesday 14.30
    Quantum Mechanics versus Classical Mechanics

Postulates of quantum mechanics are formulated in the framework of Hilbert space. The q- and p-representation are introduced to construct the propagator. Classical dynamics is regained in the limit h/2π→0 in quantum theory by path integration in propagator.

  • 3rd lecture 04.05.2011 Wednesday 14.30
On Compatibility and Non-compatibility of Quantum Observables

Necessary and sufficient conditions are discussed in terms of simultaneous diagonization of compatible quantum observables. Intrinsic and extrinsic compatibility are introduced. Uncertainty relations are shown to originated from observables of non-compatibility.

  • 4th lecture 05.05.2011 Thursday 14.30
Lorentz Symmetry, Weyl Spinors, Chirality and Dirac Equation

Space-time structure is analyzed by means of Lorentz symmetry property. Irreducible representations of the Lorentz group are discussed. Chirality is introduced to relate (l, 0 )-representation and ( 0, r )-representation. Lorentz tranfomation of the spinor and the co-spinor are studied. Dirac equation is formulated from Lorentz symmetry, and the invariance of gamma matrices with respect to different Lorentz frames is demonstrated.

  • 5th lecture 09.05.2011 Monday 14.30
Lorentz Symmetry, Weyl Spinors, Chirality and Dirac Equation (Cont.)
